Exceptionally High EV Sales in Belgium 2024, Anticipated 50% BEV Fleet Sales in Corporate Sectors by 2025

In 2024, Belgium witnessed a significant shift in its automotive industry, with electric and hybrid vehicles accounting for over half (52.3%) of all new car registrations for the first time. This milestone surpassed traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, marking a significant stride towards a more sustainable future.

The year saw a notable increase in the adoption of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), with BEVs alone making up 28.5% of the market, overtaking plug-in hybrids (15%). This was a first for Belgium, as BEVs surpassed plug-in hybrids in the secondhand car market as well, accounting for 3.2% compared to petrol vehicles' 55.1% and diesel vehicles' 30.6%.

However, consumer hesitation, concerns over battery degradation, and high depreciation rates have been key factors influencing the slow uptake of secondhand BEVs. The resale value of BEVs has dropped by 30-40% within four years, making it a less attractive option for used car buyers.

Despite these challenges, the number of charging points in Belgium increased by 72% in 2024, reaching 83,111. This expansion in infrastructure, coupled with strong government policies, has played a significant role in the growth of the Belgian EV market.

Corporate fleets have been a driving force behind this growth, accounting for 86.7% of new BEV registrations in 2024. Experts predict that by 2025, BEVs will represent at least 50% of corporate fleet sales.

Key government politicians involved in the development of electromobility in Belgium included federal and regional policymakers focused on innovation, energy transition, and transport. Their efforts were part of broader European initiatives pushing for emission-free fleet vehicles by 2030 and increasing renewable energy use.

Industry experts warn against a "stop-and-go" approach to EV policies, emphasizing the need for a stable and predictable policy framework. Bart Massin, Chairman of EV Belgium, stated that Belgium's EV journey demonstrates the importance of consistent policy support and innovative infrastructure solutions.

In 2024, Belgium registered 127,750 new fully electric vehicles (BEVs), a 36% increase compared to 2023. As electric mobility becomes the norm, Belgium has a unique opportunity to reinforce its position in the sustainable transport revolution, benefiting both the economy and the environment.

Looking ahead, the Belgian EV market is expected to continue its growth in 2025, driven by the launch of more budget-friendly BEVs, increased availability of charging infrastructure, and the potential for 100% BEV corporate fleets. To sustain this momentum, policymakers and industry leaders must focus on expanding charging networks, facilitating grid integration, and ensuring stable long-term incentives.
