Expanded investments and technological advancements are boosting the expansion of Europe's silicon hub, Silicon Saxony.
Exyte, a company known for planning, building, and delivering high-purity and sustainable facilities for the chip industry, is expanding its presence in Silicon Saxony, one of Europe's leading semiconductor regions. This move is an important step for Exyte's semiconductor business in Germany, according to Dr. Wolfgang Büchele, CEO of Exyte.
Meanwhile, several start-ups in Dresden are driving innovation in the region, contributing to Silicon Saxony's status as a hub for innovation and cutting-edge technology. These start-ups are focusing on various aspects of technology, including biosensors, sensor chips, and control cabinets, adding diversity to the technological landscape in the region.
Chip manufacturer SAW COMPONENTS is developing novel biosensors for more accurate heart attack diagnosis, while Bios SAW, another startup in Dresden, is also involved in this field. In the future, fields such as cancer and infection diagnosis will be added to the biosensors being developed in Dresden.
Finnish startup Chipmetrics GmbH produces novel sensor chips and wafers for process control in semiconductors, adding to the technological prowess of the region. eMAXX, another Dresden-based start-up, is involved in manufacturing control cabinets for chemical and gas supply systems of large factories in the city.
GlobalFoundries, a prominent player in the semiconductor industry, is also investing heavily in Dresden. The company plans to invest over one billion euros in the development of its site in Dresden, with the aim of significantly increasing production capacities to around 1.5 million wafers per year. The federal government is contributing several hundred million euros from the funding pot for the semiconductor industry to GlobalFoundries' investment.
Construction for GlobalFoundries' expansion is set to begin soon. The innovation driven by these start-ups in Dresden is expanding the scope of technologies in Silicon Saxony, with the new center for engineering and project management accommodating around 150 employees.
The start-ups in Dresden are not directly mentioned as benefiting from the billion-dollar investments, but their presence adds to the overall growth and development in Silicon Saxony. Many medium-sized suppliers at the location, such as Sachsen Kälte, also benefit from these investments. Sachsen Kälte recently opened another location near the major players.
Mayor Dirk Hilbert welcomes Exyte's increased presence in the region, stating that it underscores the growing importance of Silicon Saxony as a hub for innovation and cutting-edge technology. This expansion is a testament to the vibrant and innovative ecosystem that exists in Silicon Saxony, making it a beacon for technological advancement in Europe.
