Expanded Public Toilet Scheme Proposed for Münster
The city of Münster is set to expand its public restroom facilities, aiming to improve convenience for residents and visitors alike.
Currently, the city operates six renovated facilities, with the remaining seven still under its ownership. Since the beginning of 2024, the city has been managing these restrooms itself. However, the facilities previously managed by Wall GmbH were dismantled due to renovation not being economically viable.
The proposed locations for the new public restrooms include South Park, Coerde Square, Wienburg Park, Aasee balls, and additional sites yet to be specified.
The new restrooms, as proposed, will be barrier-free, gender-neutral, vandalism-resistant, and consider ecological aspects such as water savings. The cost of maintaining each facility is approximately 55,000 euros per year, totaling around 2.9 million euros gross for four new facilities over ten years.
The implementation of this plan depends on the funds available in the upcoming budget, which will be discussed by the city council on September 3. Construction, cleaning, maintenance, and operation of the new restrooms will be handled by an external service provider, although the organization designated for this task has not been specified.
The city council's decision to expand the public restroom facilities is part of the broader "Nice Toilet" project, which allows businesses and facilities to make their toilets publicly accessible. The city provides an operating cost subsidy to participating providers in this project.
As of now, 33 businesses and facilities are participating in the "Nice Toilet" project, with 18 located in the city center and 15 in Hiltrup. Six of the seven remaining facilities have been renovated and are currently maintained by a cleaning company, but the status of their renovation and maintenance is not mentioned.
The city aims to further expand the "Nice Toilet" project, with the plan to construct new public restrooms being one of its strategies. The budget for the implementation of the new public restroom plan is not discussed in this paragraph.
