"Expanding Stewardship Efforts on Nature Through Investment: A Look at Canada's Boreal Region"

In anticipation of the PRI In Person Event in Toronto, Will Martindale, a co-founder of Canbury, shares his experiences from a trip to Canada's Boreal Forest, emphasizing the need for investors to expand their conservation efforts.

"Expanding Stewardship Efforts on Nature Through Investment: A Look at Canada's Boreal Region"

In the heart of the Canadian wilderness, a group of 12 responsible investment and stewardship professionals embarked on a journey that shed light on the delicate balance between economic development and environmental conservation. The trip, which started at Clean Air Metals in downtown Thunder Bay, took them to a site northwest of Lake Superior, a few hundred kilometres away.

The location, a 'clearcut', was a stark contrast to the lush, verdant landscapes usually associated with the region. The scenery resembled a moonscape, with grey white twigs piled almost 3 metres high, bare rock, and trees stripped of their branches. What we were seeing was not technically deforestation, but rather degradation, for which definitions vary.

The clearcut is a site of company activity, and it poses a threat to the woodland caribou, a species listed as threatened on the Species at Risk Act since 2003. Linear features, such as logging roads, account for 10% of forest loss, and the presence of these disrupts roaming caribou.

The group's visit was focused on preserving ecologically precious land. They learned about the negative impact of glyphosate, a herbicide used to clear the way for replanting other trees, on insect, bird, and mammal life. In this case, the spray being used was glyphosate, intended to kill the invasive poplars that have an interconnecting root network, and sapling poplars were growing across the moonscape ground, perhaps a few months old.

Regrowing poplars can be problematic, as they can stop other trees from growing, change forest habitat, and reduce biodiversity. Hand removal of poplars is more costly than spraying with glyphosate, but it is a method that some prefer due to the herbicide's potential environmental consequences.

The trip also highlighted the cultural significance of the land for Indigenous peoples. The group learned about the cultural genocide of Indigenous peoples and the importance of conservation for Indigenous livelihoods and economic opportunity.

Clean Air Metals, the mining exploration company known as a "junior", was not mentioned in the search results as having registered for their annual congress near Thunder Bay in 2024. The exploration of the boreal forest for metals necessary for the energy transition, such as palladium and platinum, continues to be a contentious issue in the region.

The visit served as a reminder of the complexities involved in balancing economic development with environmental conservation and the need for continued dialogue and cooperation between various stakeholders.
