Expansion Funding of €15M for Skynopy to Broaden Their Ground Station Service Offerings

Skynopy, a French startup specialising in satellite data download technology, has secured €15M ($17.6M) in seed funding. The funding round was led by a mix of space- and tech-focused VC firms.

Founded by Pierre Bertrand and Antonin Hirsch, Skynopy's technology covers transmission over S-, X-, and Ka-bands, allowing satellite operators to download two to three times the amount of data compared to other ground station services. This technology is particularly beneficial for defence and climatological Earth Observation (EO) satellites that require speedy dissemination of data for rapid response.

Bertrand, the co-founder and CEO of Skynopy, stated that the first priority for satellite operators is fresher data and fast data downloads. To this end, Skynopy has partnered with AWS to scale rapidly, using AWS' existing ground stations. The company has already created a network of over 15 ground stations, and plans to increase its ground station footprint to over 100 in the coming years.

Two new ground stations will be built by Skynopy in French overseas territories: Saint-Pierre et Miquelon near Canada's Newfoundland and Reunion in the Mascarene Islands. These new ground stations aim to increase France's homegrown data download capabilities and benefit Skynopy's growing global customer base.

Companies with lower download needs can potentially cut their costs in half with Skynopy's technology. The newly built ground stations are designed to cater to high download needs, such as those of companies using hyperspectral EO or SAR satellites. Skynopy's tech aims to shorten the time between downloading data and sending it to the client or the cloud.

The total funding for Skynopy since its founding is now approximately €18M ($21.1M). The round was closed in less than a month, demonstrating strong investor confidence in the company's potential.

With this new funding, Skynopy is well-positioned to revolutionise the satellite data download industry, providing faster, more cost-effective solutions for satellite operators worldwide.
