Marbella, a popular tourist destination on Spain's Costa del Sol, is set to undergo a significant transformation in its road infrastructure. The city council has unveiled a comprehensive plan that includes 15 road infrastructure projects aimed at revamping mobility across the city.

The most noteworthy aspect of this plan is the complete overhaul of the A-7 stretch between Puerto Banus and San Pedro Alcantara, Marbella's worst traffic black spot. This overhaul forms part of the city's traffic improvement measures, with changes expected to the access points to the A-7 to improve traffic flow. However, precise details of the changes to the accesses are not yet specified.

One of the key changes will be the removal of access to the Marbella Casino and Avenida de Lola Flores, as part of the city's efforts to streamline traffic.

The plan aims to transform traffic flows, resolve structural issues on the A-7 and AP-7 highways, and promote safer, smoother, and more sustainable mobility. To achieve this, the project will widen the motorway from its current 20-22 metres to 28-30 metres.

Other significant changes include the introduction of a new full interchange with the AP-7 near the Costa del Sol Hospital, and the extension of an existing service road from kilometre 1052 to connect to the southern roundabout of the Nueva Andalucía interchange.

Avenida Huerta de los Cristales will be reorganised to accommodate traffic from the new Municipal Stadium. The road's alignment on the A-7 will be improved, addressing issues with poor geometry.

The partial pedestrianisation of Avenida Ricardo Soriano, Marbella's central artery, is planned to encourage more walking and cycling. A new urban road will connect the northern roundabout of the San Pedro interchange to Avenida Oriental, enhancing local connectivity.

The overpass bridge over the Guadaiza River will be expanded, and the A-355 near the future Palacio de Justicia will be upgraded. The plan also includes extended acceleration slip lanes and new service roads to eliminate dangerous and outdated direct accesses.

To divert long-distance traffic and improve access to the Costa del Sol Hospital, the connection between the A-7 and the Istan road will be completed to eliminate bottlenecks at the Cristamar junction. The A-397 roadway will be duplicated as part of San Pedro Alcantara's Urban Ring Road.

The project will eliminate three direct accesses in the Malaga to Cadiz direction between Nueva Andalucía and San Pedro. The council proposes adding a third lane in each direction along the A-7 from kilometre 1053 to 1051.

This ambitious plan is expected to revolutionise traffic flow in Marbella, making it safer, smoother, and more sustainable for both residents and visitors alike.
