Exploring Culinary Experiments in the Realm of Science: The Rise of Edible Science

Experience the thrill of science and the joy of cooking at the "Science Bites" workshop, an edible science adventure for children aged 8-12 years, happening at Space Place in Wellington, New Zealand.

The workshop, which takes place daily from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm during the school holidays from 23 September to 2 October 2025, offers a unique blend of science and culinary activities. The event runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, providing ample opportunities for young minds to delve into the world of kitchen science.

The workshop is part of the global citizen science project, "Wild Sourdough," and does not include the activity "Use the holidays to make bread." However, it does provide a host of other exciting activities. Participants will learn about rainbow diffraction chocolate, make gummy worms, explore glow-in-the-dark jelly, and more. All projects in the workshop are safe to eat, allowing children to taste their creations as they learn.

One of the highlights of the workshop is the exploration of fermentation. Children will not be making fermented drinks, as the activity is not included in the workshop, but they will delve into the fascinating world of fermentation through other activities. For instance, they will learn about gut bacteria fermentation and even set up an alcoholic fermentation.

To complement the workshop, a Pinterest board filled with resources around kitchen science has been created and can be accessed at www.pinterest.com/museumswellington/kitchen-science. Additionally, a recorded webinar titled "Kitchen Science" can be found at www.museumswellington.org.nz/kitchen-science-webinar for those who wish to prepare beforehand.

The cost for each child to attend the workshop is $65, and the event includes a complimentary planetarium show as part of the school holiday programme. The location of Space Place is 40 Salamanca Road, Kelburn, Wellington, making it an ideal and convenient location for children to attend.

Join us at "Science Bites" and embark on a delicious journey of discovery, where science meets the kitchen!
