In the world of gothic and psychedelic rock, Paul Roland stands as a niche or cult artist, a title he wears with pride. Known as the "Godfather of Steampunk," Roland has been creating music for over four decades, releasing more than 20 albums independently. His music, a unique blend of baroque pop, psych, goth rock, and dark acoustic songs, often features literate lyrics set in Victorian, Edwardian, or Regency England, with themes of the supernatural.

One of Roland's current favourite songs is Sonne by Rammstein, a testament to his diverse musical tastes. His journey into music began at the tender age of 14, when he first heard Creedence Clearwater Revival's Green River. It was from this band that Roland discovered his love for songwriting, a passion that has led him to create vivid vignettes featuring Victorian villains, haunted inventors, and supernatural figures.

Roland's career has been marked by many milestones. Originally, the songs on his re-issued album Bates Motel were intended for surviving members of The Velvet Underground. The album, now available on Bandcamp, showcases a transatlantic psych-pop sensibility. The lead single, Tortured by the Daughter of Fu Manchu, is a captivating example of Roland's storytelling prowess.

Bates Motel is not the only album Roland has re-issued. He has also re-released his album under the same name, reflecting his commitment to preserving his musical legacy. The rediscovered songs on the album offer a glimpse into Roland's creative process and his ability to craft timeless music.

In addition to his music, Roland is also an accomplished author. He has written dozens of books on esoteric subjects, including ghosts, angels, meditation, and past life regression. His experiences with the paranormal date back to his childhood, when he had out-of-body experiences.

When asked about his favourite song, Roland chose San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair by Scott McKenzie. If forced to choose, this would be the one song he could listen to for the rest of his life. Another lyric that moves him is from Bolan's Cat Black, The Wizard's Hat.
