Explosive device in Frankfurt East successfully disarmed
In a significant incident, a 75kg unexploded World War II bomb was defused in Frankfurt-Fechenheim on Friday. The discovery of the bomb caused an immediate evacuation of the surrounding area, with a radius of 500m from the site.
The Hanauer Landstraße was affected by the evacuation, leading to congestion during the Friday afternoon rush hour. The nearby regional rail line and the railway line between Frankfurt-Süd and Maintal-Ost were also temporarily closed, causing disruptions to public transport, according to the Rhine-Main Transport Association (RMV).
Railcars on adjacent tracks had to be removed, and a gas line had to be shut off and emptied as a precautionary measure. The tram service between Frankfurt-Fechenheim and the Ratsweg roundabout was temporarily suspended.
Everything within 500m of the discovery site was cleared during the evacuation. The bomb disposal unit of the fire department was responsible for defusing the bomb, a task that brought relief for the around 300 residents and commuters in eastern Frankfurt who were initially threatened by the dangerous relic of the past.
The defused bomb was found on the former Neckermann site. The successful defusing of the bomb allowed residents to return home, marking the end of a tense situation in Frankfurt-Fechenheim. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing presence of World War II relics in urban areas and the importance of careful handling by emergency services.
