Expressing sympathies over the loss of a 16-year-old on the subway platform

In the small town of Geisleden, Thuringia, a sense of shock and sorrow has gripped the community following a tragic incident that took place at Friedland train station. On August 11, a 16-year-old girl, who had been commuting daily to her training place in Friedland, lost her life under mysterious circumstances.

Initially, the police suspected the death was an accident. However, further investigations led by the public prosecutor's office in Göttingen revealed a chilling truth: DNA traces of the suspect, Muhammad A., a 31-year-old Iraqi man, were found on the victim's shoulder. Muhammad A. has since been placed in a psychiatric clinic under a detention order.

The girl, who had fled from Ukraine and arrived in the Eichsfeld district in August 2022, was described by Markus Janitzki, the mayor of Geisleden, as always being cautious. The parents of the girl had suspected early on that the death was not an accident.

The news of the suspect has sparked great outrage and anger among the community. Flowers and candles at the station in Friedland now serve as a poignant reminder of the 16-year-old. The sympathy for the family was immense, with many donations pouring in online and older people personally handing in money at the town hall in Geisleden. So far, around 14,000 euros have been collected.

The family had two donation appeals published for them, and the community's support was evident. They lived in the municipality until the end of November of the same year, when they moved to the nearby spa town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt.

Friedland, located in the far south of Lower Saxony, near the state borders with Hesse and Thuringia, is a town that will forever carry the weight of this tragic incident. The loss of this young life has touched the hearts of many, and the community continues to mourn and remember the 16-year-old girl.
