Extreme temperatures in Belgium have resulted in heightened demand for travel aid by tourists
In the summer of 2025, Europ Assistance, a leading travel assistance provider, reported a significant rise in medical and road interventions among tourists.
According to their data, collected between 27 June and 27 August, Europe saw the majority of medical cases, with France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Turkey topping the list. Globally, Thailand, the US, Indonesia, and Morocco were the most popular tourist destinations.
Younger tourists (aged 20 or younger) mainly experienced stomach and intestinal problems, while older tourists (aged 50 or older) were more likely to suffer from heart and respiratory problems, neurological issues, and infections.
Europ Assistance noted a 23% increase in medical files during the summer of 2025 in Belgium, a figure that was more significant than the 16% increase observed in the summer of the previous year. The increase in interventions was particularly noticeable around Belgium's national holiday on 21 July and the changeover weekends in July and August.
The rise in medical cases was not limited to Europe. Globally, travelers visiting destinations for which they were ill-prepared were participating in activities that led to an increase in medical cases.
In addition to medical interventions, Europ Assistance also reported a significant rise in the number of road interventions. Most issues were caused by engine failure, battery, and starting problems, accounting for 70% of all road interventions. France, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Italy, and Luxembourg were the countries where most road interventions were carried out.
Interestingly, VAB, a Belgian automobile association, reported a high number of interventions related to tyres and wheels in France, and a 34% increase in problems with electric vehicles.
Europ Assistance received a total of 2,750 calls per day and 10,000 requests through its assistance app during the summer months. Despite the increase in interventions, the company managed to handle each case efficiently, ensuring the safety and well-being of tourists.
The number of dermatological cases was also on the rise among tourists, adding to the list of summer travel woes. However, Europ Assistance remains committed to providing the necessary assistance to ensure a stress-free travel experience for all.
