Famous Telegram account shares fabricated statement attributed to Lars Klingbeil on German retirees' matters
In recent months, the Telegram channel "UNN - Independent Neutral News" has come under fire for publishing fabricated quotes, raising concerns about its credibility and potential ties to propaganda actors.
The controversy began in July 2021, when the channel attributed a quote to German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, claiming he expressed shame for German retirees. However, the Finance Ministry confirmed that Klingbeil did not make such a statement. Searches in search engines and the press database "Genios" also found no evidence of Klingbeil making such a statement.
Similarly, in June 2022, the channel published a quote allegedly from Friedrich Merz, and in February 2022, it claimed to have a quote from an alleged voter from Düsseldorf. These claims have not been substantiated.
The person behind the channel, Christopher Wolf, describes himself as an "entrepreneur, investor, and expat." He has been linked to Russia and other propaganda actors, and he has been found to publish his own fakes, as well as propaganda content from known actors such as Alina Lipp and Thomas Röper.
Wolf's YouTube channel also includes his own fakes and propaganda content. He regularly boasts about alleged good connections to Russia and temporarily published content from "RIA Novosti Deutschland GmbH" in the summer of 2023. RIA Novosti is a Russian news agency that was sanctioned by the EU in the spring of 2024.
Some users under an X-post spreading the false Klingbeil quote doubted its authenticity, while others evoked emotions, such as indignation or even demands for violence. In March 2025, the channel published another fabricated quote, this time from Mario Voigt, about work-unwilling retirees, and the reactions ranged from demands for resignation to fantasies of violence and murder.
Despite the controversy, the goal of the channel seems to be to promote certain agendas, such as the idea of making working in old age more attractive with an "active pension," where up to 2,000 euros of monthly income do not have to be taxed.
The coalition agreement between Union and SPD states that they want more flexibility in the transition from work to retirement, and they are relying on voluntariness. However, the spreading of misinformation and propaganda raises questions about the credibility of such claims and the motivation behind them.
Upon request, Wolf did not respond to questions about being paid to spread Russian propaganda and the nature of his connections to the Russian state apparatus. The person behind the Telegram channel "UNN - Independent Neutral News" who is possibly closely connected to Russian propaganda is not explicitly identified in the provided search results.
As the public becomes increasingly aware of the spread of misinformation and propaganda, it is important to remain vigilant and to fact-check information before sharing it. It is also important to hold those responsible for spreading such content accountable for their actions.
