Far-right activists allegedly illegally obtained corporate property funds to purchase a castle, according to a lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General.
In a significant development, New York Attorney General Letitia James has taken legal action against Peter Brimelow and his wife, alleging misuse of charitable assets and improper solicitation of donations. James is asking the judge to dissolve the foundation, order the Brimelows to pay restitution, and bar them from serving on VDARE or the board of any nonprofit or charity in New York state.
The investigation into the Brimelows and VDARE, a platform for white nationalist and anti-immigration viewpoints, has been ongoing since 2022. James stated that the couple used VDARE like their personal piggy bank, draining millions in charitable assets to enrich themselves.
The lawsuit alleges that the Brimelows have looted or wasted VDARE's corporate assets, including the misuse of over $1.4 million to acquire a castle complex in West Virginia. The Brimelows are accused of charging VDARE rent and fees for use of the West Virginia castle.
The criminal investigation is being led by Ed Martin, Trump's former pick for the US attorney in Washington, DC, who now holds four titles at the Justice Department, including director of the weaponization working group and special attorney for mortgage fraud.
Peter Brimelow, a far-right anti-immigration activist, has been under scrutiny for his financial dealings. In 2024, he stated that the investigation against him and VDARE by New York Attorney General Letitia James was unethical and unscrupulous. Brimelow claimed that the investigation "bears no rational relationship to any conceivable offense."
CNN has reached out to Ed Martin for comment, but as of this writing, no response has been received. The Brimelows have not publicly responded to the allegations.
This is not the first time Letitia James has been in the headlines. In 2023, a New York appeals court panel upheld James' lawsuit against Donald Trump, his adult sons, and the Trump Organization, but threw out a nearly half-billion judgment against them, finding it "excessive." Both sides have announced plans to appeal. James is also currently under criminal investigation by Trump's Justice Department for potential mortgage fraud and civil rights violations related to her probes into Trump, his family business, and the NRA.
As the case unfolds, the public will continue to watch closely for updates and developments in this high-profile investigation.
