Fast Charging operators, specifically Fastned and Tesla, represented approximately 44% of the Dutch network by May 2025.
The Netherlands is witnessing a rapid expansion in the fast-charging sector, with several key players making significant strides in the market.
According to recent data, Fastned leads the pack with 1,060 fast charge points and a total installed capacity of 302 MW, growing by 10% year-on-year. Tesla follows closely, with 912 fast charge points and 192 MW of power, showing a slightly higher growth rate of +11%. Together, Fastned and Tesla account for nearly 44% of all fast-charging points in the country.
However, the market is far from being a duopoly. Allego, another prominent player, operates 239 CPs and 59 MW, although its growth rate is relatively slower at 3%. Meanwhile, companies like Shell Recharge and LEAP24 are making their mark. Shell Recharge operates 529 CPs providing 102 MW of power, with a 41% year-on-year growth, while LEAP24 boasts 161 CPs and 29 MW, growing by 50% year-on-year.
The category of "Others" represents a wide array of smaller or regional operators, collectively operating 962 CPs and a total of 243 MW of installed capacity. Notable among these is Tango Electric, which has shown the highest growth rate at 63%.
The increasing need for interoperability, transparent pricing, and standardised customer experiences among fast-charging operators is evident as more enter the market. This is crucial to ensure a seamless charging experience for users and to drive the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
The expansion of fast-charging stations is not without challenges. The Dutch electricity grid is operating near full capacity in many areas, slowing down the expansion of new fast-charging locations. Additionally, local permitting processes can vary widely and add delays to infrastructure rollouts.
Despite these hurdles, fast-charging stations provide the speed and convenience necessary for many Dutch drivers, especially those without private home charging, to rely fully on electric transport. Along the motorway network, fast charging enables long-distance travel, connecting cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, and Groningen with minimal charging disruption.
