Federal food safety regulators issue alert over radioactive seafood from Walmart
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning regarding certain lots of Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp. These shrimp, originating from Indonesian supplier BMS Foods, may be contaminated with Cesium-137, a radioactive substance that can lead to burns, acute radiation sickness, and in severe cases, death.
The affected Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp have lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1, or 8005539-1 and a best by date of 3/15/2027. If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, the FDA advises you to throw it away immediately.
The FDA has detected possible Cesium-137 in shipping containers at four U.S. ports, and the contaminated shrimp are believed to have originated from India. In response, the FDA is recommending a recall of all BMS Foods products shipped after the contaminated containers were identified.
It is important to note that the FDA has not confirmed that any shrimp containing Cesium-137 has entered the U.S. food supply. However, as a precaution, the agency is working with distributors and retailers to remove the affected shrimp from circulation.
The FDA advises not to eat, sell, or serve the affected Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp. Instead, they should be discarded in a sealed bag in household trash to prevent access. Returning the affected shrimp to the store could spread contamination.
If you have any questions or wish to report an illness related to these shrimp, contact Walmart customer service or the FDA's consumer hotline at 1-888-SAFEFOOD.
Imports from BMS Foods are currently banned from entering the United States until the company resolves the violations. The FDA takes the safety of the food supply very seriously and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
Stay informed and follow the FDA's guidance to ensure the safety of your food and your health.
