Federal government instructs Philadelphia's coal or oil power station to stay operational

The Department of Energy has reissued an emergency order on Thursday, aiming to ensure the ongoing operation of an oil and natural gas-fired power plant near Philadelphia. The order is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to continue the operation of certain fossil fuel plants, despite their planned retirement.

The emergency order is addressed to PJM Interconnection, the grid operator in the mid-Atlantic region, and Constellation Energy, a utility company. The company that operates the two units at the Eddystone Generating Station is Exelon Generation Company.

The reissued emergency order is a response to potential weather conditions, with the administration citing potential hot weather over the coming months as the reason for the order. The Trump administration is urging utilities and grid operators to continue running fossil fuel plants scheduled for retirement to meet the increased demand for electricity during these hot weather periods.

The original emergency order was issued under Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act in May. This order was also aimed at ensuring the continued operation of the Eddystone Generating Station until late November.

The Trump administration's efforts to continue fossil fuel plant operations could potentially impact retirement plans for certain power plants. This policy stance is part of a broader effort by the administration to support the use of fossil fuels, despite growing concerns about climate change and the transition to renewable energy sources.

The emergency order for the power plant near Philadelphia is one of several efforts by the Trump administration to keep fossil fuel plants operational. These efforts are focused on plants scheduled for retirement, as the administration seeks to maintain a reliable energy supply during peak demand periods.
