In an ambitious move to enhance digital services, Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb, has been appointed as the chief design officer of the United States by the Trump administration. His new role will see him leading the newly created National Design Studio within the White House.

The National Design Studio aims to improve services that touch every American, from paying off student loans to managing Social Security benefits and filing taxes. The studio's website states its mission to improve how Americans experience their government.

According to recent reports, about 45% of federal websites are not mobile-friendly, and only 6% of them are rated "good" for mobile use. To address this issue, an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last week directed the National Design Studio to breathe new life into the design of federal websites.

The White House is drawing inspiration from the Nixon administration's beautification project in the 1970s. The administration plans to attract the best talent of the current time to complete this work, with a focus on talent from the private sector.

Joe Gebbia has been working closely with leaders at the General Services Administration to achieve this goal. He has also been instrumental in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) completing a project to launch a fully online retirement application system for federal employees. The OPM's project to digitize the federal retirement system has been in progress for more than 20 years.

The completed project by OPM focused on digitizing millions of federal employees' retirement records stored in a mine in western Pennsylvania. This is a significant step towards modernising government services.

The 24 largest federal agencies are also preparing to eliminate more than 330 websites, as reported by our platform earlier. The new website, "America by Design," outlines the mission of the National Design Studio.

The America by Design website states that it's time to continue what was started during the Nixon administration for the digital age. The site provides contact information for a reporter covering recent changes in the federal government. Joe Gebbia's mission is to update government services to be as satisfying to use as the Apple Store.

It's worth noting that the website's copyright notice states that it is not intended for users located within the European Economic Area. This could suggest a focus on improving services for American citizens.

As the work progresses, it is expected that the National Design Studio will make significant strides in modernising federal websites and improving the overall digital experience for American citizens.
