The US Department of Transportation has announced a significant investment of $175 million for the Federal Highway Administration's Ferry Boat Program. This funding aims to improve ferry services and provide cost-effective travel options for communities across the country, including states, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

The Ferry Boat Program, a part of the Federal Highway Administration, seeks to enhance ferry services and fill a transportation gap by funding projects that provide critical access to areas lacking other means of transport and where high passenger demand already exists. The funding is eligible for constructing and operating ferry boats, terminals, and maintenance facilities, as well as acquiring right-of-way for new ferry facilities.

Ferry boats carrying cars are eligible, provided the service is on a public route where it's not feasible to build a bridge or tunnel. Passenger ferries are also included, as long as they serve public routes where a bridge or tunnel cannot be built.

The funding is distributed to ferry operators through state departments of transportation. Improvements made possible by this program can increase ridership and help relieve congestion on nearby highways. The aim is to provide more affordable travel options, promote tourism, and enable commerce.

In his statement, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the importance of ferry services in regions like Alaska, where they serve as critical arteries for commuters and regional supply chains. He stated that improving ferry services makes life easier by making the transportation of people and products smoother.

The fourth annual CiTTi Awards, an unmissable occasion for the UK's transportation sector, will recognize achievements and innovations in river services on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. More information about the CiTTi Awards can be found at www.cittiawards.co.uk.

It is important to note that the US Federal Highway Administration's Ferry Boat Program is a US federal initiative and is unrelated to German federal states. No specific German federal states ("Bundesländer") were mentioned in the search results as participants in this program.

This funding marks a significant step forward in improving mobility and connectivity across the United States, making travel more accessible and efficient for millions of people.
