Film Festival Review: Marianne Faithfull's Reflection on Mortality and Legend in Emotional Homage - Venice Film Festival (Broken English)

In the world of rock'n'roll, few names carry the weight of notoriety quite like Marianne Faithfull. One iconic moment that solidified her status was the drug bust at her Sussex home in 1967, an incident that features in the new film, "Broken English."

Directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, the film is a docu-bio that delves into Faithfull's life, aiming to set the record straight about her experiences and achievements. The mission is clear: to shine a light on a talented woman who wanted her voice to be heard, and to criticise the British media and music industry for their treatment of her.

The film takes place in a fictional place called The Ministry of Not Forgetting, where Tilda Swinton plays The Overseer, who watches over The Record Keeper, portrayed by George McKay. McKay interviews Faithfull, who discusses her experiences with the Beat Generation, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez, among others.

One of the film's central themes is the notion of interviewing celebrities and the expectations surrounding their public images. "Sister Morphine," a song famously associated with Faithfull, is described as an early victim of cancel culture, highlighting the challenges faced by artists in maintaining their authenticity in the face of public scrutiny.

The film also explores the attempts by the establishment to discredit Faithfull and punish her for her political interviews. Faithfull, however, remains resilient, refusing to discuss certain aspects of her past, particularly the drug bust. She defends her then-boyfriend, Mick Jagger, despite his lack of support during difficult times.

Courtney Love lends her voice to the film, singing Faithfull's 1983 song "Times Square." The film's running time is 1 hour and 54 minutes, and it is distributed by Global Constellation and Cinetic (North America).

Sadly, Faithfull passed away earlier this year at the age of 78. "Broken English" serves as a poignant tribute to her life and career, allowing her to come out from the shadows and be seen, addressing the expectations of women in rock history.

The directors, Forsyth and Pollard, have previously covered the turbulent life of Nick Cave in their 2014 cult hit, 20,000 Days on Earth. With "Broken English," they continue to explore the complex lives of musicians, delving into the poetic interior lives of artists and the struggles they face.
