Fire breaks out on a rooftop in Upper Palatinate, disrupting road traffic

A fire broke out on the roof of the Wiesau railway station building in the Upper Palatinate early this morning. The blaze, which has since been brought under control, caused extensive damage to the railway building and disrupted train services between Weiden in der Oberpfalz and Marktredwitz.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as all individuals were able to evacuate the building safely. The firefighting efforts are still ongoing as of noon.

Initial reports suggested that the photovoltaic system on the roof was on fire, but further investigation by the criminal investigation department (Kripo) has cast doubt on this assumption. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, with a technical defect being the main suspect.

The affected railway building is currently under renovation, and the police have estimated the damage to be in the seven-figure range. As a result, a replacement service has been set up, and further delays are possible.

Trains were able to resume running later in the day, but with partial cancellations and delays. The route between Weiden in der Oberpfalz and Marktredwitz was affected, leading to restrictions in rail traffic.

Deutsche Bahn reported the incident on the X platform, and construction work that was being carried out at the station when the fire occurred is believed to have played no role in its cause. The investigation into the fire's origin is still ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
