Fire at Ewald Dörken AG in Herdecke Successfully Extinguished

A significant fire incident at the Ewald Dörken AG production plant in Herdecke was successfully extinguished on Friday evening, thanks to the joint efforts of multiple fire departments and emergency services.

The fire department in Herdecke was alerted to the incident at around 20:07, with the first units arriving on the scene within five minutes. The initial response involved units from the Wetter (Ruhr) fire department, who were alerted overregionaly due to a parallel fire alarm at Millöckerweg.

Upon arrival, the hall at Ewald Dörken AG was filled with smoke, originating from an oven where plastics were burning. The fire spread through an exhaust system of the production plant and released smoke into the open air via a chimney.

In response, a massive deployment of forces was necessary, involving 9 fire departments from the Ennepe-Ruhr district and surrounding cities, as well as the control center of the Ennepe-Ruhr district. With over 132 personnel on the scene, the production plant and pipe system were gradually opened, leading to an effective extinguishing success. At 00:24, the message "Fire under control" was issued, and at 02:30, the incident commander reported "Fire out."

After cleanup at the scene, it was handed over to the police for cause investigation. The fire department Herdecke, meanwhile, cleaned the deployment vehicles and equipment and restored operational readiness. During the night, warm and cold drinks, rolls, and chocolate bars were provided for the personnel, along with seating and resting areas. Catering was provided due to the high number of personnel and the measures that had been ongoing for five hours.

No persons were harmed in the fire. As a precaution, the population was warned via the NINA warning app about an odor nuisance, but there was no danger to the population. A representative of the affected company thanked the fire department, stating, "It's good to know that we have such a reliable fire department. The concepts work, and we thank the numerous personnel."

County fire chief Martin Weber added, "I'm very pleased that we could see again today that the fire family, as well as the entire blue light family of the Ennepe-Ruhr district and in all neighboring towns, cooperate closely and are well integrated."
