Fire in Grevenbroich's City Center: Twelve Residents Rescued

A fire broke out in a multi-family building in Grevenbroich's city center on Saturday evening, prompting a swift response from local firefighters and emergency services.

The fire was reported at a building on Cologne Street around 7:30 PM. Eyewitnesses reported heavy smoke coming from the building's basement and people still inside. According to the Feuerwehr Grevenbroich, firefighters found residents on the rear side of the building calling for help from upstairs windows.

Around 70 firefighters from Grevenbroich, along with numerous ambulances, were on site. The incident commander, Christoph Nott, escalated the response to "MANV 10" due to potentially up to ten injured individuals.

Firefighters found the fire in a basement room and began extinguishing it. They immediately began rescuing people using ladders, evacuating ten adults and two children. The last firefighting measures were completed, and the basement was cleared of smoke around 1.5 hours after the alarm.

Two people were taken to hospitals for further examination. Unfortunately, the extent of their injuries is not known at this time. The fire department is unable to provide information on the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.

The Grevenbroich city ordinance department arranged temporary accommodation for the rescued residents. However, the responsible authority for the accommodation of residents displaced by the fire in the uninhabitable multi-family complex was not explicitly stated in the provided sources. Typically, in such cases, local city administration or social services along with the fire department coordinate temporary housing for affected residents.

The police and fire services were involved in emergency response and coordination on site. The last firefighters left the scene at around 9:50 PM. For further inquiries, contact the Feuerwehr Grevenbroich Press Team (Thomas Kuhn, 01567/8451744, [email protected]).
