In a startling discovery, an illegal gambling den was uncovered in the cellar of a building located at 118-120 Elizabeth St., Manhattan, during a routine inspection of illegal lithium battery charging on September 18, 2025.

The gambling den, which was a disaster waiting to happen according to FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker, was found to contain three storage rooms piled with counterfeit Prada bags and other combustible materials. The front hall of the den housed 17 illegal slot machines and a couch.

The FDNY inspectors also found uncertified lithium-ion batteries in the den, prompting a call for backup from the city's Department of Buildings. The FDNY report deemed all sleeping areas in the den as severe life risks due to the mazelike nature of the cellar and heavy clutter.

The NYPD Vice Squad was involved in the operation to address the gambling den, with two criminal summonses issued but no arrests made. The city's Department of Buildings issued a vacate order for the residents of the cellar and the den's location, citing safety concerns.

The gambling den was related to the entertainment industry and involved commercial gaming activities. No secondary exits were found in the den, adding to the safety concerns. The NYPD Vice Squad confiscated the slot machines and counterfeit bags from the den.

Despite extensive searches, there are no records indicating any authority that initiated a procedure against an illegal casino in a basement in Manhattan in September 2025. The discovery of this underground gambling den serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against illegal activities in the city.
