Firefighters in Neukirchen-Vluyn, Germany, can now successfully tackle a blaze due to a compromised gas pipe allowing for operation.
In an incident that took place on Tuesday afternoon at 11:58 AM, a gas leak occurred on Dürer Street in Neukirchen-Vluyn due to damage from an excavator during construction work.
Upon arrival, the damaged gas pipe was covered in earth, but a strong gas smell was noticeable on the street. As a precaution, three residential buildings were evacuated.
The fire departments of Neukirchen and Vluyn were alerted and responded to the scene, with a total of 25 firefighters and police officers involved in the operation. The Fire Department Neukirchen-Vluyn was at the forefront of handling the gas leak.
Two teams in breathing apparatuses, equipped with gas warning devices, checked the area but no elevated concentrations were detected. The fire department secured the scene throughout the duration of the work to stop the gas leak.
Extensive excavation work was necessary to expose and stop the gas leak. The responsible energy supplier arrived at the scene and carried out the necessary repairs. The scene was later handed over to the energy supplier.
Throughout the operation, the fire department also provided drinks for the evacuated residents. The fire department of Neukirchen-Vluyn ensured fire protection and secured the danger zone, while the fire department of Vluyn provided additional support.
The gas leak was finally stopped after approximately two hours. The number of residential buildings evacuated due to the gas leak remains at three.
