Fires in Cáceres, Ávila, and Pontevedra forest regions have been unshackled from containment measures: 42,000 hectares incinerated in the year 2025.
The past few weeks have seen several forest fires erupt across Spain, affecting various provinces and causing concern for both the environment and the safety of residents. Here's a roundup of the current situations in some of the most affected areas.
In the province of Cáceres, the fire in Caminomorisco has been the most severe of the summer in Extremadura. The blaze, which started several days ago, has consumed nearly 2,775 hectares and is currently stabilized around 80% of the affected perimeter. Fortunately, no personal victims have been reported, and the majority of evacuated residents have been able to return to their homes following the favorable evolution of the fire.
Moving north to Pontevedra, the fires in A Cañiza and Mombeltrán have caused significant damage. The fire in A Cañiza, which started at 16:23 on Wednesday, has affected 300 hectares and forced the Xunta to declare level 2 emergency due to its proximity to the population nucleus of Nogueiro. The organization mobilized to combat the fire was the Galician Emergency and Civil Protection Agency (Axencia Galega de Emerxencias e Protección Civil). The fire in Mombeltrán, on the other hand, has burned over 2,200 hectares within a perimeter of 25 kilometers.
In the town of El Arenal and Mombeltrán, the focus of fire containment efforts, confinements and evacuations have been lifted in their majority on the morning of last Thursday. The Autonomous Government had decreed a confinement in seven population nuclei as a precaution in the area of the A Cañiza fire, and residents had to be confined away from their homes due to the fires in several areas.
The fires this summer require greater responsibility and awareness to prevent their recurrence during hotter months. More than a thousand firefighters and extinction means are working on several active fires, with everything little to protect the natural environment and ensure the safety of all.
It's worth noting that forest fires are currently active in other provinces as well, including Ávila. The fire in Mombeltrán, Ávila, has three active flame fronts, located near Mombeltrán, in the ravine of the sanctuary of San Pedro de Alcañtar, and in the highest part of El Arenal.
So far this year, more than 40,000 hectares have been burned due to forest fires. The fires this summer serve as a reminder of the importance of taking precautions to prevent their occurrence and to ensure the safety of both the environment and the people living in affected areas.
