Delta Air Lines Flight DL56 Experiences Severe Turbulence, Leading to Emergency Landing

Delta Air Lines Flight DL56, traveling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, encountered severe turbulence on July 30, 2025, resulting in an emergency landing at Minneapolisโ€“St. Paul International Airport.

The turbulence occurred around 11 p.m., causing sudden changes in altitude. According to reports, the aircraft gained 1,000 feet in less than 30 seconds and dropped around 1,350 feet over the next 30 seconds.

The incident, which took place approximately 40 minutes after departure, led to a precautionary emergency landing at the Minnesota airport. Delta has issued statements expressing concern for the affected customers following the turbulence event.

The Airbus A330-940, the aircraft involved in the incident, landed safely at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport at 7:25 pm local time. The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the incident.

The dinner service had just begun on the flight when the turbulence occurred. As a result, some serving trolleys moved, and some passengers who were not wearing seatbelts were thrown towards the plane ceiling and subsequently fell to the floor.

A young lady on the flight was reportedly thrown towards the ceiling twice and may have suffered broken ribs. Nearly 10% of the flight's manifest (25 out of 270 people) required hospitalization due to injuries from the turbulence. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport Fire Department and paramedics offered initial medical attention to passengers in need.

Turbulence is a normal risk associated with flying, driven by factors such as weather patterns, jet streams, and geographical features. However, some parts of the world are considered turbulence hotspots.

Following a similar incident in May 2024 on Singapore Airlines flight SQ321, the carrier refunded everyone on board and offered compensation to passengers. Singapore Airlines offered US$10,000 in compensation to passengers with minor injuries and larger payouts for those with more serious injuries. It remains to be seen whether Delta Air Lines will follow a similar course of action.

As of August 4, 2025, no further updates about injuries or follow-up investigations have been detailed in the sources available. Turbulence incidents, while rare, serve as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with air travel and the importance of passenger safety. Delta Air Lines has emphasized their commitment to passenger safety in their statement following the incident.
