FlixBus Introduces LNG-Powered Coaches in Central Europe

FlixBus, the European intercity bus company, is making strides towards a greener future by introducing LNG-powered coaches on its routes in Central Europe. This marks the first time this technology has been deployed on long-distance bus services in Czechia and Poland.

The two newly launched vehicles are Scania Irizar models designed for long-haul routes. These buses can run on bio-LNG, potentially reducing CO2 output by up to 90%. This move is part of FlixBus's broader efforts to trial alternative fuel technologies across its network.

The company, which currently operates over 100 vehicles using alternative drivetrains across its European and international networks, has expanded its LNG fleet into Central Europe. Operations are now in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Poland. The LNG-powered coaches on the Prague-Kraków route are part of a broader effort to test alternative fuel technologies.

The decision to expand LNG usage into Central Europe is based on the technology's suitability for long-distance routes. Infrastructure and range limitations are key factors that make LNG a viable option compared to electric and hydrogen alternatives. LNG propulsion offers emissions reductions of approximately 10-15% compared to conventional diesel-powered coaches.

FlixBus aims to achieve net-zero emissions in Europe by 2040. This introduction of LNG-powered coaches is a significant step towards this goal. The company that introduced these coaches on the routes between Prague and Krakow is RegioJet, and the two newly deployed buses are produced by the company Solaris.

This move by FlixBus is not only a step towards a greener future but also a testament to their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. As they continue to trial alternative fuel technologies, it's clear that FlixBus is leading the way in sustainable transportation.
