Schloss Burg, a historic symbol of the Bergisches Land region in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has reopened after a twelve-year renovation. The medieval complex from 1133, which had been severely damaged, especially during the Thirty Years' War, and was still rudimentary in some places, has been transformed into a modern attraction.

More than 54 million euros were invested in the renovation, with contributions from the federal government, the state, and the city triangle. The castle complex has been made more accessible with the installation of elevators and ramps, making it easier for visitors to explore the historic site.

The first structure to undergo renovation was the Bergfried, and the restoration work was based on the condition of the castle in 1887. The walls, the Bergfried tower, and the chapel and great hall wall paintings have been restored, preserving the castle's historical charm while modernizing its infrastructure.

The renovated castle is equipped with an audio tour and cable car service, making it more accessible and enjoyable for visitors. The heating system has been updated to use environmentally friendly pellets and a floor heating system, ensuring a comfortable visit for all.

The reopening ceremony was held by the cities of Wuppertal, Solingen, and Remscheid, and Mayor Tim Kurzbach believes the castle has the potential to attract tourists and develop into a place of encounter. The barriers and scaffolding that had obscured the castle for years have been removed, revealing the restored medieval complex in all its glory.

Subsequent generations had also used the castle as a quarry and plundered it, but the renovation work has restored the castle to its former grandeur. The renovated castle has the potential to attract tourists from beyond the Bergisches Land, showcasing the rich history and culture of the region.

The castle is located on a hilltop in Solingen-Burg and is accessible until September 6, 2027. Visitors are encouraged to explore the castle and learn about its history, while enjoying the modern amenities that have been added during the renovation. The first owner of the castle, Count of Berg, would likely be envious of the modern updates if he knew.
