Football legend Lee Roy Jordan, instrumental in Dallas Cowboys' historic Super Bowl victory, passes away at 84 years old.
Lee Roy Jordan, Legendary Dallas Cowboys Linebacker, Passes Away at 84
In a statement released on Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys announced the passing of one of their greatest players, Lee Roy Jordan, at the age of 84. The team did not provide any details regarding the cause of Jordan's death or the circumstances surrounding it.
Jordan, a five-time Pro Bowler, was a first-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 1963 and spent his entire 14-year career with the team. He was a key member of the "Doomsday" defense that helped the Cowboys win the Super Bowl in 1971, and was the defensive leader on Alabama's 1961 national championship team.
Jordan currently holds the second position on the Cowboys' all-time tackles list with 1,236, just behind Darren Woodson, a safety on the Dallas teams that won three Super Bowls in the 1990s, who has a total of 1,350 tackles.
The Cowboys' statement described Jordan as the embodiment of the Cowboys' spirit, highlighting his leadership, instincts, and work ethic. Jordan's off-field commitment was the centerpiece of his life after retiring in 1976.
The breakthrough for the Cowboys came in Super Bowl 6, with a linebacking crew led by Jordan and Chuck Howley, along with defensive tackle Bob Lilly, Mel Renfro, Dave Edwards, and Herb Adderley. The Cowboys lost to the Baltimore Colts on a last-second field goal in Super Bowl 5 in 1971, but they were known as "next year's champions" after the famous "Ice Bowl" loss in 1967.
Jordan was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983, and he was the first player inducted into the Dallas Cowboys' ring of honor after Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989. The Cowboys announced that they will celebrate Jordan's life and legacy in the coming days.
Rest in peace, Lee Roy Jordan. Your impact on the game of football and the Dallas Cowboys will never be forgotten.
