Washington State Names Jaxon Potter as Starting Quarterback

In a surprise move, Washington State University (WSU) coach Jimmy Rogers announced that redshirt sophomore Jaxon Potter will be the starting quarterback for the upcoming season. The announcement was made in a pre-game interview before the team's first game against Hawaii.

Potter, a 6-foot-5 standout, impressed coaches during fall camp with his strong and accurate passes. Offensive coordinator Danny Freund expressed his excitement about Potter's performance, particularly his accuracy and command of the huddle.

Last season, Potter played 13 snaps in garbage time against Hawaii, and he made his mark with two touchdown passes. One of these passes was to true freshman wide receiver Carter Pabst, and another to junior college transfer Devin Ellison, who was projected to make a big impact in WSU's offense due to his speed and reliable hands.

However, Ellison's absence during pre-game warmups due to an injury and in a boot could be costly for WSU's offense. Ellison missed a handful of fall camp practices due to a heel injury, and his absence will leave a gap that the team will need to fill.

Cale Reeder, a senior safety, was also absent during pre-game warmups, seen on crutches. Reeder's veteran savvy would have been valuable in WSU's secondary, but the team has depth with Tucker Large and Matt Durrance.

Potter did not play his college career previously, and the provided search results contain no information about his college career. However, his performance in fall camp suggests that he is ready to step up to the plate.

The absence of Ellison and Reeder is a tough blow for the Cougars, but they will need to rally around Potter and focus on their game plan. Prior to Saturday, coaches declined to announce a starter, and the team has kept their cards close to their chest.

WSU basketball great Klay Thompson and football alumni are from Santa Margarita High School, Potter's alma mater. Santa Margarita High School also produced WSU basketball great Klay Thompson and football alumni River Cracraft, Riley Sorenson, Kyle Sweet, Nick Begg, and Matthew Bock.

Potter's best day of fall camp came when he completed two touchdown passes, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Ellison during fall camp, which may have been a sign of things to come. As the season kicks off, Potter will look to lead the team to victory and make a name for himself in the process.
