Football player M'Baye Niang moves back to Turkey following Gençlerbirligi's promotion
In a surprising move, French-Senegalese footballer M'Baye Niang has signed a two-year contract with Turkish club Gencelerbirligi, based in the capital Ankara. The 28-year-old forward, who previously played for Sampdoria in the Italian Serie B, has joined the club on a free transfer.
Niang, who was trained at Caen and has also played for Montpellier, Rennes, and AC Milan, ended the previous season at Sampdoria. His performances helped the team narrowly avoid relegation, with the forward scoring three times in 16 games.
This marks a return to Turkey for Niang, as he previously represented Al-Ahli before the 2023/24 season. However, his initial desire was to return to Ligue 1 in January 2024.
Niang has represented Senegal 15 times and scored 4 goals for the national team. His international career includes a stint with Sampdoria in the Italian Serie B.
Gencelerbirligi, who were promoted to the top tier this season, have suffered three defeats in their first three league matches. The club will be hoping that Niang's experience and goalscoring ability will help turn their fortunes around.
Niang's arrival at Gencelerbirligi is a significant boost for the club, as they continue their journey in the Turkish Super Lig. With his proven track record in various European leagues, fans are eager to see how Niang will perform in Turkey.
