Football player Moreno transfers back to Spain, joining Girona squad
Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno has completed a move to LaLiga side Girona on a free transfer, ending a one-year spell at the Premier League club. Moreno's departure follows that of Jacob Ramsey, Leander Dendoncker, and Leon Bailey, as Aston Villa continue to reshape their squad.
During his time at Villa Park, Moreno made 48 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and registering three assists. The Spanish defender's most notable contribution came during the 2024-25 season, where he spent the latter half on loan at Nottingham Forest, helping the team qualify for Europe.
Girona, who finished 16th in LaLiga last season, have been active in the transfer market this summer. Alongside Moreno, the Catalan club has signed five new players, including Hugo Rincon, Axel Witsel, Vitor Reis, and Thomas Lemar. The new coach at Girona, Michel SΓ‘nchez, will be hoping that Moreno's experience and ability will help the team improve on their previous season's performance.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa have also been busy in the transfer market. Lewis Dobbin, who joined the club from Everton last year, has been loaned out to Preston North End for the 2025-26 season. Dobbin had earlier spent time on loan in the second tier with West Brom and Norwich City.
Moreno's first potential match for Girona could be this Sunday against Villarreal, providing an early opportunity for the defender to impress in his new surroundings. As Aston Villa and Girona prepare for their respective seasons, both teams will be hoping for a successful campaign ahead.
