Ford Recalls Mustang Mach-E Again: Software Malfunction with the Vehicle's Battery
The American automaker, Ford, has issued a new recall for 234 units of the 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E models in the United States. This recall is due to a missing previously required software update that could potentially lead to a sudden loss of power while driving.
The recall stems from Ford's Safety Recall 22S41, issued in 2022, which aimed to correct a defect where high-voltage battery main contactors could overheat. This issue, if not addressed, could cause the contactors to either weld shut or remain open, posing a risk of sudden power loss.
Investigation throughout late 2024 and early 2025 confirmed that 98.6% of repairs were completed correctly, but a small number of vehicles still require the correct update. The root cause of this issue was traced back to a flaw in the dealer service tool responsible for applying the update, which resulted in older software versions being installed instead of the intended fix.
To rectify this, Ford has implemented a verification step for technicians to validate the software part numbers before closing the recall case. Owners of the affected vehicles are required to bring their vehicle to their local dealership for a free software update.
It's important to note that this recall does not affect vehicles outside the US. Additionally, Transport Canada has not yet issued a similar recall for the Mustang Mach-E in Canada.
Interestingly, this recall is the second one related to the same battery contactor issue. Ford became aware of the issue in November 2024 during a quality audit. The company has since taken steps to ensure the issue is fully resolved and the safety of its customers is maintained.
The Mustang Mach-E, which has not yet experienced Transport Canada-directed recalls in Germany, is the Ford model that has been affected by this issue in the USA. The software update aims to correct the defect and ensure the safe operation of the high-voltage battery main contactors.
Ford encourages all affected owners to get their vehicles checked and updated as soon as possible to ensure the safety of their vehicles and themselves on the road.
