Foreign travel for Germans: These Nations Evoke Unease Among Tourists
In a comprehensive survey conducted by AutoScout24 and market research institute Innofact, it was revealed that many German drivers feel uneasy when driving abroad. The survey, which involved over 2,000 car owners in Germany, sheds light on the concerns and challenges faced by German drivers when venturing outside their home country.
The survey revealed that 40% of participants feel insecure driving in the United Kingdom, a figure that increases among women and people over 40. Another 24% find the driving behavior of locals unpredictable or aggressive. This sentiment is not exclusive to the UK, as many Germans also feel uneasy driving in Turkey, with 25% of those surveyed admitting to this.
One of the main causes of concern abroad is local regulations. Almost half of those surveyed mentioned this as a significant worry. To mitigate this, it is advised to plan the route carefully, considering toll fees, vignette requirements, and deviating rules.
Fear of theft or damage to one's own car is widespread, with around 29% fearing theft or damage. For those seeking additional protection, theft insurance is an option to consider. Mandatory equipment for many countries includes a warning triangle, first aid kit, and warning vest. A pre-departure vehicle check is recommended, including tire pressure, oil level, brakes, lighting, coolant, and windshield washer fluid.
Countries like Spain, Croatia, or Denmark score much more relaxed, with only around 2% saying they feel uncomfortable behind the wheel. However, countries with higher traffic accident rates or volatile conditions, such as Syria due to terrorism and political instability, are perceived as the most unsafe by German drivers. The highest safety concerns among drivers themselves are not specifically detailed in the results.
The survey also highlighted the importance of checking one's car insurance policy to understand coverage abroad. Every tenth person is unsure whether their own insurance will even apply abroad.
