Former Jacksonville Jaguars Manager Defends $22 Million Alleged Embezzlement as "Unlawful Loan"
In a candid interview with CNN, Amit Patel, the former finance manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars, admitted to stealing over $22 million from the NFL team. Patel's statements were part of a broader discussion about the dangers of gambling addiction and its impact on professional sports.
Patel's gambling addiction clouded his judgment, leading him to believe he could replenish the stolen funds using online fantasy sports. He deposited up to $25,000 at a time, sometimes ten times a day, on FanDuel, receiving a total of $1.1 million in gambling credits.
FanDuel operates in strict accordance with established state laws in support of problem gambling prevention. However, Patel's lawsuit against the company claims he was pursued by a personal VIP host who contacted him more than 100 times on the same day and showered him with exclusive trips to events such as the Super Bowl and the Masters.
A significant portion of the money Patel stole from the Jaguars, estimated at $5 million, was used for personal expenses. Federal prosecutors claimed that Patel used some of the stolen money to bankroll a lifestyle of luxury, including chartering private jets, maintaining a country club membership, buying high-end watches, and expanding his expensive sports memorabilia collection.
Patel, who is currently serving his sentence in FPC Montgomery, a low-security federal prison in Alabama, described his gambling addiction as something that could happen to anyone. He has taken steps to change, including sobriety, recovery meetings, and founding a Gamblers Anonymous group in Jacksonville Beach.
In addition to his struggles with gambling addiction, Patel also had issues with alcohol and drugs, according to his attorneys. He faces six state grand theft charges in Florida, each with a potential sentence of up to three decades. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 16 in Duval County.
Patel's case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of gambling addiction on individuals and the organisations they work for. It also raises questions about the role of online gambling platforms in preventing and addressing gambling addiction.
