Four young storks, hatched this year, have already migrated to a different continent, according to our tracking data.
In the picturesque towns of Raisting and Dießen, four young white storks have recently been fitted with ring transmitters, marking the start of their incredible journey. These young birds, named Alex, Toni, Maxi (from Raisting), and Fridolin (from Dießen), are part of a larger group of storks that set off towards the south on August 11th.
Their flight routes can be traced online at movebank.org under the tracking data. The tracking data of these four young white storks from Raisting and Dießen equipped with transmitters is managed by the Max Planck Institute.
Hui Buh, another young stork from Raisting, born in 2019 at the Affenberg in Salem near Lake Constance, also has a transmitter. Last winter, Hui Buh flew to Switzerland.
The ring transmitters, explained by Wolfgang Bechtel, the white stork coordinator at the Bavarian State Association for the Protection of Birds (LBV), are white, in addition to the usual black plastic ring with an individual identification. These transmitters are attached to the other leg of the storks.
Alex, one of the storks from Raisting, reached Spain on August 16th and Morocco on August 24th. Toni, another stork from Raisting, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar on August 27th. The other two storks with ring transmitters have also flown over the strait to Africa.
After crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, Toni took a route along the African Mediterranean coast, while Alex took a course along the African Atlantic coast. The other two storks' routes are currently being monitored.
Bechtel notes that it's pleasing that the four inexperienced animals have so far mastered their challenges well. He is observing all four young storks via "Movebank".
The storks from Raisting are trackable online on the database "Movebank". The other stork, Fridolin from Dießen, can also be tracked. To find the flight routes of these storks, set "bav" as the filter, then click on the plus sign in front of "Life Track White Stork Bavaria", and the four transmitter storks are at the bottom of the opening list under "eELSA". To find Hui Buh's flight route, enter "Affenberg" in the search field, then open the animal list by clicking on the plus sign.
This year, four white storks hatched in Raisting and Dießen. As they continue their journey, their paths will undoubtedly be a source of fascination and excitement for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.
