"France's experiment with 'social renting' has proven effective - could other countries adopt the approach?"

"France's experiment with 'social renting' has proven effective - could other countries adopt the approach?"

In an effort to stimulate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) at the lower end of the economic spectrum, the Mercator Institute has proposed changes to the social leasing scheme for EVs, set to be implemented in 2025.

The proposed modifications aim to make the scheme more affordable for private individuals, while also reducing expenditure and uncertainty associated with the programme. One key change is extending the duration of social leasing to 10 years, allowing EVs to be passed on to other beneficiaries of the scheme after this period.

Corporate purchase subsidies for EVs have been abolished, but the social leasing scheme remains as an alternative for private individuals. The bonus for private individuals buying an EV has been reduced by €1,000, but the extended social leasing scheme could potentially offset this cost for many.

The Mobility in Transition Institute further proposes limiting social leasing to the lowest-income groups, ensuring that the benefits of the scheme are targeted towards those who need it most.

If successful, this revised social leasing scheme could serve as a model for other countries looking to encourage the adoption of EVs. The social, economic, and environmental benefits of the transition to EVs could be major, with reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality being key advantages.

In conclusion, the proposed changes to the social leasing scheme for EVs aim to make electric mobility more accessible and affordable for all, while also promoting sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of transportation.
