French Formula One driver, Pierre Gasly, signs a new deal with Alpine, agreeing to remain with the team until the 2028 season.
In the world of Formula 1, Alpine is shaking up its lineup for the 2025 season and beyond. The French team, currently struggling in the constructors' standings, has announced several changes, including the appointment of a new CEO and the potential replacement of one of its drivers.
Steve Nielsen, a British engineer, has been appointed as Alpine F1 CEO, taking up his new role this weekend ahead of the Italian Grand Prix. Nielsen will report to Flavio Briatore, the executive advisor of the Alpine brand.
One of the most significant changes for Alpine concerns its driver lineup. Pierre Gasly, a French driver who previously raced for Red Bull's second team, AlphaTauri, and won the Italian Grand Prix with them in 2020, has joined Alpine for the 2023 season.
Gasly's arrival comes as a replacement for Jack Doohan, an Australian driver who was sidelined due to poor results. Doohan previously raced for Alpine but has not been able to deliver the desired performance.
Franco Colapinto, an Argentinian, is currently driving for Alpine as a temporary replacement for Doohan. Colapinto joined Alpine as a reserve driver in January 2023 but has yet to score a single point after eight races with the team. Despite this, Alpine has not yet confirmed Colapinto as a permanent driver for the next season.
The team has struggled since finishing fourth in the championship in 2022, and they currently find themselves in tenth and last place in the constructors' standings after 15 races of the season.
Alpine's second driver for the 2025 season is expected to be Alexander Dunne, a 19-year-old McLaren junior driver currently racing in Formula 2. If confirmed, Dunne would potentially replace Colapinto, who has not met the team's expectations.
Pierre Gasly, in the meantime, has expressed his excitement about committing to a long-term future with Alpine. The young driver will undoubtedly be hoping to help turn the team's fortunes around and challenge for podiums and championship glory in the years to come.
