Friday Announced: Alert Day Scheduled for Maryland on Saturday
Cold Front Brings Cooler Weather and Potential Storms to Maryland
After a hot and humid Friday with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 80s, a weakening cold front is expected to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms to Maryland this evening. Saturday is a First Alert Weather Day due to a stronger cold front moving through.
According to meteorologist Derek Beasley, who was promoted to WJZ's first-ever Chief Meteorologist in March 2023, temperatures will drop into the 50s and low 60s on Saturday night as cooler Canadian air rushes in once the cold front clears.
The timing of the front's arrival is crucial; an earlier arrival may weaken storms, while a later arrival increases the chance of storms developing during the afternoon and evening, especially along and east of I-95. Some storms on Saturday could turn strong, with damaging winds as the main concern.
On Sunday, expect a breeze and highs only in the 70s. Lingering clouds are expected, and there might be a shower closer to the coast. Some spots west and north of I-95 could experience a downpour or gusty winds.
Next week brings a stretch of cooler, drier weather. Highs will run below normal in the 70s, and low temperatures will dip into the 40s and 50s. Some of the typically colder valleys in western Maryland could dip into the upper 30s on Monday night.
It's worth noting that Derek Beasley is currently the chief meteorologist at WRDW-TV, an NBC-affiliated television station in Augusta, Georgia. Before joining WJZ, he provided forecasts for the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas for more than 10 years.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing weather situation. Remember to stay safe and take necessary precautions during any storms.
