Fugitive individual apprehended in Qatar following a three-year manhunt
Rabih Alkhalil, a notorious drug kingpin wanted for various crimes in Canada, was arrested in Qatar on Friday, following his daring escape from a British Columbia prison in July 2022.
In the early 2010s, Alkhalil, a 38-year-old man, was part of a cocaine distribution consortium in Canada. His criminal activities led to multiple convictions, including two murder cases. Prior to his escape, Alkhalil was on trial for another murder case in British Columbia.
The Sûreté du Québec dismantled Alkhalil's consortium in November 2012, and one of its own members became a civilian informant for the SQ. Alkhalil was convicted of first-degree murder in Ontario and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
In July 2022, Alkhalil managed to escape from a British Columbia prison. Three accomplices, posing as construction workers, used a plasma torch to cut a fence and allowed Alkhalil to flee. They wore hard hats and vests and used fake IDs with images found on the internet. After escaping, the three men left the prison grounds in a white van.
Since his escape, Alkhalil has been the subject of an international wanted notice (Red Notice) from Interpol. A reward of $50,000 is offered for any information leading to his arrest. He is one of the main individuals sought in the BOLO program.
Rabih Alkhalil was tried in Quebec and sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in the consortium in 2020. His latest sentence was still underway when he escaped from prison.
