SeaTwirl's Floating Wind Technology Demonstration to Begin Off the Norwegian Coast

SeaTwirl's innovative floating vertical axis wind turbine (VAWTT) technology is set to be demonstrated off the Norwegian coast, following a successful competitive bidding process and the granting of a concession by the Norwegian authorities.

The concession, which marks a significant step forward for the project, will allow SeaTwirl to demonstrate its technology as part of the Verti-Go project. The project is a collaborative effort led by SeaTwirl as the technical coordinator and the University College Cork as the project coordinator. The consortium partners for the Verti-Go project include EDP - Cnet Centre for New Energy Technologies SA, Greenov, Next Fabrication, Sub Connected AB, Sowento, RSTER, PNO, Bureau Veritas, and Zorlu Enerji. DNV also serves on the project advisory board.

The design phase of the Verti-Go project is scheduled to commence on 1 October 2025 and is estimated to be completed around the end of 2026. The construction and operations phase, during which a 2 MW turbine will be demonstrated, is planned to last until the end of 2029.

The project has secured funding from Horizon Europe and the EU programme "Demonstrations of innovative floating wind concepts". This funding, amounting to EUR 15 million, will support the development and demonstration of SeaTwirl's floating wind technology. The project was selected as the successful applicant for funding under the EU programme in May this year.

SeaTwirl's technology incorporates a floating VAWTT with a tower placed on an underwater structure. This unique design allows the turbine to harness wind energy efficiently, even in deep waters where traditional wind turbines are not feasible. A 30 kW S1 prototype turbine was launched and installed at the Lysekil test site in Sweden in 2015, providing valuable insights into the technology's potential.

The Verti-Go project is expected to contribute significantly to the development of innovative renewable energy solutions, furthering Norway's and the EU's commitment to a sustainable future.
