Future Vision for Employment: Tesla's Fourth Installment Unveils the Admiralty of Industry
In a recent development, Elon Musk, the visionary CEO of Tesla, unveiled Master Plan 4, a roadmap for the company's future. This plan, however, has sparked a debate among experts and enthusiasts, with some expressing concerns about its lack of specifics and focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and robots.
The journey began back in 2006 when Musk first published the Tesla Master Plan, which outlined the company's ambitions to build a sports car, an affordable car, and an even more affordable car, along with providing zero emission electric power generation options. In 2010, Tesla Master Plan Part Deux was published, emphasising the creation of solar roofs with battery storage, expanding the electric vehicle product line, developing self-driving capabilities, and enabling cars to make money when not in use.
Fast forward to April 2023, and the third Master Plan was published, focusing on creating a fully electrified and sustainable economy. Now, with Master Plan 4, Musk's current focus is on automation and artificial intelligence to achieve sustainable abundance, with a notable role for the humanoid robot, Optimus.
However, the new plan seems to indicate a shift away from sustainable energy and towards AI, robots, and self-driving cars. Craig Trudell from Bloomberg Automotive and Dana Hull see this as a potential weak point for Tesla, as it seems to suggest a departure from the company's roots.
The language used in Master Plan 4 has also been criticised for its vague and ambiguous nature. Seam O'Kane from TechCrunch compares it to a college student imitating erudite discourse, while TechCrunch's assessment of the plan itself is that it lacks specifics and reads like generic, nonsensical text.
The reaction from The Verge is that it ignores the reality of Tesla's struggling car business. Meanwhile, Max Chafkin from Bloomberg suggests that Tesla may benefit from a focus on its core business of manufacturing electric cars, rather than on Musk's various projects and ventures.
Despite the criticisms, the fourth Master Plan, Master Plan 4, has been officially announced and focuses primarily on Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots, with 80% of Tesla's value now attributed to them. The plan, however, still lacks the detailed specifics found in previous plans.
Elon Musk's focus on AI, robots, and self-driving cars in Master Plan 4 may be a deliberate attempt to untangle himself from the future of Tesla. Musk's Optimus humanoid robots bear a resemblance to a federation stormtrooper from Star Wars and a masked ICE agent, adding an element of intrigue to the new direction Tesla is taking.
