Jake's 58 Casino Hotel, nestled in New York's Long Island, has sprung back to life after an unanticipated hiccup in its casino operations. The gaming floor, brimming with 1,000 electronic video lottery terminals (VLTs), fell silent on the morning of Wednesday, June 5th, due to an inconvenience with the casino's IT system.

The VLTs, not unlike slot machines, wouldn't cooperate, leaving patrons and staff scratching their heads. Jake's took to their social media platforms to announce that tech whizzes were on the case, working diligently to remedy the situation.

Things took a while to get rolling. Jake's initially aimed to reopen by 5 PM on that same day, but that goal didn't pan out. The reopening was then delayed until 8 PM, but even that timeline was missed. Jake's eventually resumed operations just before 11 PM, Texas time; the casino's doors are open daily from 8 AM until the wee hours of 4 AM.

Silence from the Casino on the Disruption

In 2023, Jake's 58 got tangled up in a cybersecurity incident that left its gaming machines incapacitated following a cyberattack on the New York State Gaming Commission's centralized VLT system[1]. Articulating that a cybersecurity debacle on the central system managed by Everi was the primary culprit, Jake's joined forces with the eight other VLT gaming facilities in identifying the root cause of the operational disruption.

This time, however, Jake's 58 hasn't disclosed any information regarding Tuesday's temporary shutdown. Phil Boyle, President of Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting Corp. (Suffolk OTB), which owns and operates Jake's, merely noted that normal operations had resumed. He announced, "Jake's 58 is now open and functioning at full capacity. Yesterday, we encountered an unexpected snag with one of our casino systems. Our team swung into action, and everything's back and running smoothly." Boyle went on to express gratitude for the patience and understanding of their guests and eagerness to extend a warm welcome back to the casino[2].

When touched for more details, both News12 Long Island and Newsday drew a blank[2]. Contact attempts directed towards Suffolk OTB as well as the New York State Gaming Commission yielded no additional insights.

The Inner Workings of VLT Systems

Jake's 58, along with other VLT casinos in New York, maintains roughly 46% of the gross gaming revenue raked in by the terminals[3]. The state pockets 44% of the takings, which it funnels into K-12 public education funds. The remaining 10% covers VLT vendors and operational expenses associated with the management of the central VLT system[3].

Jake's shied away from pursuing a full-fledged casino license for downstate New York, because achieving this would have meant swapping out the VLT terminals for slot machines[3]. The three casino licenses also come with the privilege to run live-dealer table games and sports betting operations. Jake's decided to forgo this opportunity in favor of expanding and renovating its existing facility. The $210 million project will double the casino floor size and VLT positions to 2,000, overhaul the 210 guestrooms, construct a new parking structure with space for 500 vehicles, erect a 3,500-square-foot events center, and instate a 200-seat food court[3]. The project is slated for completion in the spring of 2025.
