Gay Irish hurler Donal Og Cusack faced death threats following his public disclosure of his orientation
Donal Óg Cusack: Ireland's First Openly Gay Elite Sportsman
Donal Óg Cusack, a champion hurler from Cloyne, Co Cork, made history in 2009 when he came out as gay in his autobiography, Come What May. This bold move made him Ireland's first openly gay elite sportsman, a title he carries with pride.
Born and raised in Cloyne, Donal Óg's family homestead is a significant part of his life. Bordered by a GAA pitch and a statue of his relative, legendary hurler Christy Ring, it holds a special place in his heart. His grandparents' homes, where his parents grew up as neighbours, have been a constant source of inspiration. His grandfather's words to him as a young kid, "Live while you can and die when you can't help it", have resonated with him throughout his life.
However, his decision to come out publicly was not without controversy. Donal Óg received death threats from unidentified individuals or groups. Despite the threats, he and his father, who also laughed about the situation, chose to face the challenges head-on. Donal Óg believes that his sexuality should not be a source of hassle in life.
Today, Donal Óg lives with his partner of nine years, Nathan, in a brand new architect-designed home. He shares his life with two Chow Chow dogs and continues to be an active figure in Irish hurling.
In a new series of Keys To My Life, starting on RTE One and RTE Player at 8:30pm on Sunday 31 August, Donal Óg will share more about his life and experiences. The first episode of the new season will feature Donal Óg, offering a unique insight into his life and career.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Donal Óg remains a beacon of courage and resilience. His story serves as a reminder that one's identity should never be a source of fear or shame, but a testament to one's authentic self.
