GCU Community: At Granite City University, you're part of one big family
Grand Canyon University's Parent Council Offers Support and Community
Grand Canyon University's Parent Council is a valuable resource for parents of students attending the university. One such parent, Brandi Binkley from Illinois, finds comfort in the council's support during her freshman daughter's transition to college.
Michele Iddings, another parent, shares similar sentiments. She found solace in the Christian focus of Grand Canyon University and was particularly moved by the Lope Family Sendoff event during Welcome Week. The event, led by GCU alumni and Worship team leaders, was an emotional gathering filled with songs of praise.
University Pastor and Dean of Students, Dr. Tim Griffin, and Director of Spiritual Life, Erik Nelsen, spoke at the Lope Family Sendoff, further emphasising the Christian values that Grand Canyon University upholds.
The Parent Council, led by President Todd Kinley, collaborates with the Welcome Program during Move-in Week to support parents during their children's transition to college. The council gathers on the Promenade during Welcome Week, offering parents doughnuts, coffee, and opportunities to connect with the university, inviting them to Family Weekend, and distributing GCU swag.
The council also hosts hangouts and opportunities for families to connect with the school during move-in and learn about available resources throughout the year. Parents can join Lope Family and Soul Care groups through the council to connect with other Lope families and create a sense of belonging and involvement without being on the university's campus.
Trish Pullin, the head of the Parent Council's social media, explains that the council's mission is to help parents and students. The council aims to bring a piece of GCU to everyone's home states through these groups, creating a sense of community and connection for parents across the country.
Michele Iddings, who dropped off her daughter for her freshman year at Grand Canyon University, trusts that the university is the next step in her daughter's journey. She finds comfort in the Christian values of the university, which resonate with her own beliefs.
The Parent Council has provided emotional and practical support to the Binkleys, making their transition to Grand Canyon University smoother and more enjoyable. The council's efforts to create a supportive community for parents is a testament to their commitment to the well-being of students and their families.
