German actor Tobias Moretti expresses dissatisfaction with Reality TV in Germany
Tobias Moretti, the acclaimed Austrian actor, is set to make a comeback to German television with the improvisation series "Die Hochzeit," airing on ARD from September 5, 2025.
Before his fame as Kommissar Rex in the 1990s, Moretti was relatively unknown in the acting world. However, his roles in the popular TV series catapulted him to stardom. Prior to his acting career, Moretti studied music and composition in Vienna and holds a degree in agriculture. These early pursuits may have influenced his decision to live on a farm in Tyrol, where he currently resides.
In "Die Hochzeit," Moretti plays Johann Pichler, the father of the groom, with a sense of ominous seriousness. Interestingly, this role marks Moretti's return to speaking in dialect, a departure from his previous roles. Johann is a Tyrolean hotelier, a role that seems to align with Moretti's rural background.
Moretti, an Austrian native, values dialects deeply, especially in the context of literary standard language. He recently expressed concern about the decrease of regional dialects in German television, referring to it as a "horror." In "Die Hochzeit," Moretti's character speaks in dialect, reflecting his appreciation for dialects and regional traditions.
This new role in an improvisation series is a refreshing change for Moretti, who is known for his meticulous and methodical approach to acting. Fans of Moretti are eagerly awaiting his performance in "Die Hochzeit," which promises to be a unique and engaging series.
