German Coach Hoeneß discusses the national team:

German Football Legend Uli Hoeneß Stands by Julian Nagelsmann as National Team Struggles

In a candid interview during the 30th anniversary show "Doppelpass" on Sport1, Uli Hoeneß, the honorary president of FC Bayern Munich, addressed the German national team's recent string of defeats, including their loss to Slovakia in the World Cup qualifiers.

The 66-year-old football icon refused to suggest any changes in the coaching staff, instead urging a refocus on the essentials of football in Germany. Hoeneß expressed his concern over the series of losses, including the World Cup qualifiers and the Nations League final tournament against Portugal and France, which he found quite dramatic.

During the interview, Hoeneß emphasised the importance of discussing football in Germany rather than transfers. He also made it clear that he would rather lose the first game than the last, referring to the loss to Slovakia.

In a surprising turn of events, Hoeneß recommended Julian Nagelsmann as the coach leading up to the 2026 World Cup. Nagelsmann, who was previously the coach at Bayern Munich, has had his contract extended beyond the 2026 World Cup to 2028. This decision was made following the team's loss to Slovakia, marking their first game in the World Cup qualifiers for the German Football Association's team.

The loss occurred in Bratislava on Thursday evening, with Slovakia securing a 0:2 victory. Despite this setback, Hoeneß warned against discussing the World Cup or even the title, stating that while Germany might be capable, everything needs to fit, and at the moment, it doesn't.

Stefan Effenberg, a former German international, shared Hoeneß's sentiments, finding the series of defeats quite dramatic. However, Hoeneß continues to support Nagelsmann as the right coach for the national team, maintaining his faith in the Bayern Munich alumnus.
