Annalena Baerbock Sworn In as President of the UN General Assembly

Annalena Baerbock, the former German Foreign Minister, has been officially sworn in as the President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The ceremony took place at 17:00 CEST, marking the start of her one-year term.

Baerbock's election to the position was met with an overwhelming majority, making her the fifth woman to hold the role. Her predecessors include Vijay Lakshmi Pandit, Angie B. Nixon, Vijay Laxmi Patel, and Maria Fernanda Espinosa.

The 80th session of the UNGA is currently opening, and Baerbock's first session is planned for 21:00 CEST. Her role primarily involves overseeing sessions, managing proceedings, and setting the agenda for the General Assembly.

Baerbock's tenure comes with significant challenges and political and financial pressure. These include cuts made under the administration of former US President Donald Trump and potential interference attempts, such as those reportedly from Russia during her election.

Despite these challenges, Baerbock has pledged to drive reforms and use the resources of the General Assembly as efficiently as possible. She has identified achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, combating the climate crisis, and promoting gender equality as her priorities.

In her acceptance speech, Baerbock stated that she would lead as an "honest mediator" with a unifying force. She has previously made headlines with videos on Instagram from New York, showcasing her lighter side. One video, in the style of "Sex and the City," featured her in a yellow taxi, while another showed her getting coffee and a bagel and making self-deprecating jokes about her German accent in English.

The upcoming General Debate of the UNGA in late September will be attended by heads of state from around the world. After the swearing-in ceremony, Baerbock will take questions from journalists.

The former President of the UNGA is Philemon Yang, the former Prime Minister of Cameroon. Baerbock was a member of the German Bundestag from 2013 until she became Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs in 2021; prior to that, from 2009 to 2013, she was chairwoman of the Brandenburg Green Party. However, the search results do not mention her belonging to any organization for more than five years before becoming Federal Foreign Minister, other than her Bundestag membership which started in 2013.

As the new President of the UNGA, Baerbock faces a crucial time in global politics. With her focus on sustainable development, climate action, and gender equality, she aims to make a lasting impact on the world stage. After the swearing-in ceremony, she will take questions from journalists, providing a first glimpse into her vision for the UNGA's future.
