German Traditional Marksmanship Exhibit at the Rheinische Schützenmuseum Neuss - Authentic German Culture?
In the heart of Neuss, Germany, a fascinating exhibition is now open at the Rhine Shooting Museum. Titled "Province - provincial?", this special event is a joint venture between the Rhine Shooting Museum Neuss and the Limburgs Schutterij Museum Steyl, and forms part of the cultural-historical museum network Rhine-Maas's theme year.
The exhibition, which is free to attend, showcases items from both the German Rhineland and Dutch collections. It delves into the relationship between the two shooting traditions, revealing how German shooting societies and Dutch Schutterijen have developed a similar tradition due to regional proximity and shared historical roots.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the display of items from the German collection, many of which have not been shown often before. These items complement the colourful uniforms from the Netherlands, with Dutch Schutters rarely wearing green uniforms and instead appearing in a variety of colours.
Curator Britta Spies, an art curator known for her work in German museums, and archivist Malaika Winzheim have combined loans from the Netherlands with objects from the German Rhineland to create this unique exhibition.
Visitors can expect to see the traditional royal shoot, but also the lesser-known "shooting tree" competition where delegations from different clubs compete against each other. Both societies wear uniforms, march through cities with brass bands, and organize large public and city festivals.
In addition to the main attraction, group tours can be arranged upon request, offering a more in-depth look at the relationship between the two shooting traditions.
The idea for the exhibition was inspired by a visit by Dutch Schutters to the shooting museum in 2008, and it serves as a continuation of the exploration of the relationship between the shooting traditions of Germany and the Netherlands.
The exhibition is generously funded by the regional cultural policy of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Rhineland Regional Association, and the Sparkasse Neuss. So, whether you're a history buff, a fan of tradition, or simply looking for a unique cultural experience, make sure to visit the Rhine Shooting Museum in Neuss before the exhibition closes.
