In a thrilling encounter played in Cologne, Germany, Florian Wirtz scored a direct free-kick goal to make the final score 3-1 in favour of the hosts against Northern Ireland.

The match, attended by 43,169 spectators, marked the 25th for Julian Nagelsmann as the national coach. The German team started the game with some changes, with David Raum and Jamie Leweling being deployed on the wings to provide more pace defensively and offensively.

The opening goal of the match came early, with Serge Gnabry scoring a chip shot at the 7th minute, marking his first international goal in over two years. However, Northern Ireland equalized at the 34th minute, thanks to a goal from Isaac Price.

Antonio Rüdiger picked up his second yellow card in the qualification and will be suspended for the next game against Luxembourg in October. The next World Cup qualifier for Germany is against Luxembourg on October 10 in Sinsheim, and three days later, they will play the return match against Northern Ireland in Belfast.

Nagelsmann acknowledged the importance of the game, stating that they needed to show a different face. Waldemar Anton and Robin Koch were new starters in the defense, replacing some of the players who had wobbled against the Slovaks. Joshua Kimmich and the German team switched to administration mode, leading to a dangerous counterattack and an equalizing goal for Northern Ireland.
